Making Positive Changes

Feelings and Behaviour

Many things get in the way of making positive changes to our lifestyle. Even when we think, or know it would be good for us.

Big steps might seem too hard and so we put them off. By making smaller changes, one by one, it can seem more possible.

How we feel will affect how we behave. This can be especially true when we are trying to make healthy choices. It can get in the way of us reaching our goals.

Supporting Children To Make Changes

Children and young people often find it hard to find the words to tell us how they are feeling. Instead they show their feelings in the way they behave.

When your child is acting in a way that worries, or even annoys you – take some time to think what their behaviour is telling you. It might be that;

Your child might seem difficult to ‘fill up’ and keep asking for snacks. They might really be saying they feel bored and would like some time with you?

Your child is ‘climbing the walls’ or picking fights with their siblings. They might be telling you they need more active play. You could try getting them to do about 5 minutes of star jumps, some dancing, or a race around the garden.
