Neurodiverse conditions can co-occur. This means it is possible for a child or young person to be diagnosed with more than one neurodevelopmental difference. For example, a young person may show patterns of strengths and differences that could be considered in the context of both autism and ADHD, or ADHD and dyslexia.
These are only some examples of co-occurring diagnoses, please refer to the understanding neurodiversity section for more information about types of neurodevelopmental differences.
Research now tells us that it is relatively common for neurodevelopmental differences to co-occur. Neurodivergent children and young people may also experience mental health conditions which may be connected to their neurodiversity or independent of this.
For example, a young person with Autism and ADHD may experience low mood because of the fatigue they experience when trying to mask their neurodiversity or manage environmental triggers. Also, a young person with a neurodevelopmental difference may experience an anxiety disorder which occurs separately.
It is important to be aware of co-occurring conditions to make sure your child gets the correct support for their needs. This is because the support and advice for one difference may be different for another.
Learning about the different neurodevelopmental differences can be a helpful way to start. This will help you understand the range of neurodevelopmental differences and if your child may be presenting with one or more of these. You can also speak to a health professional if you feel your child is presenting with one or more neurodevelopmental differences for additional support and advice.
If you feel your child is presenting with a mental health need as a result of, or in addition to an underlying neurodevelopmental difference, it is important to share your concerns with a health professional, such as your child’s GP so you can discuss other services for support.
