Neurodivergent children may need extra support in a wide range of situations. These might include developing new skills, taking part in education, regulating their emotions, making friends, understanding social boundaries and communicating their needs.
The way in which we communicate with our children can have a positive or a negative impact in how they respond to the interaction. Things to consider might be the tone of voice, the volume and the words we use.
It's important to recognise, embrace and celebrate your child's strengths and differences and to give them the support and resources they need. If they face constant criticism and negativity, it can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.
You may need to be flexible with your strategies and adapt them as your child grows. Many of the strategies you can use are simple and you don't need to be an expert to help your child. The most important thing is that they feel loved, and included and they regard home as a safe place.
