Stage 2 - Practising Single Sounds

This 2nd stage is for practising sounds on their own (not in words). A therapist will let you know which target sounds to practise. Remember to say the sound only, not the letter name. For example you would say ‘s’ not ‘suh’ or ‘ess’.

Using Single Sounds

Take turns with your child. When it’s your turn, occasionally say the wrong sound. This helps your child to recognise the sounds and it increases their awareness of the sound. Praise every attempt.

If your child produces the right sound, tell them. If they make a mistake, praise them for having a ‘good try’. Find times of the day when your child is most responsive to practising. Keep practice sessions fun and work within your child’s attention span. Aim to practise regularly - little and often is best!
